Gul Root

Gul Root is Lead public health pharmacist for the Health and Wellbeing Directorate at Public Health England and Principal Pharmaceutical Officer at the Department of Health.

Gul spent the initial part of her career in hospital pharmacy specialising in children’s services and latterly in women’s services. She left hospital pharmacy to pursue a career in primary care, as a Pharmaceutical Adviser to East Surrey Health Authority for nearly 7 years. She has been Principal Pharmaceutical Officer at the Department of Health (DH) since November 2001, where she has led on public health policy for pharmacy, working alongside public health policy leads within the DH, across other government departments and external stakeholders.

She was seconded to Public Health England in December 2013, as the lead public health pharmacist within the Health and Wellbeing Directorate. In this role she is providing system leadership to ensure pharmacy plays a pivotal part in improving the health of people in England and leading on acceleration of Healthy Living Pharmacies.
