Blood in pee campaign
This week we launched a new Be Clear on Cancer campaign, this time highlighting bladder and kidney cancer symptoms. Around 17,450 people in England are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer every year and around 7,600 people die annually. Blood in pee is a symptom in over half of bladder cancers and almost a fifth of kidney cancers.
Mental Health Taskforce
This week we welcomed a new Mental Health Taskforce Report. PHE's Kevin Fenton said: “With one in four of us experiencing a mental health problem at some time in our lives; this is a nationally important agenda that affects us all, which the Taskforce’s report rightly recognises. Public Health England is committed to working with others in championing good mental health, leading work nationally to prevent poor mental health, preventing suicide and addressing the unacceptable inequalities people with a mental illness experience. By working with our partners on the Taskforce’s recommendations we can help make significant progress within a generation.”
New research on antibiotic prescribing
Research on cutting unnecessary antibiotic prescribing was published in The Lancet this week. The randomised trial, which is the first of its kind, suggests that by offering GPs feedback, rates of prescribing unnecessary antibiotics can be cut.
